The Easiest Fly to Tie in The World

The San Juan worm is the easiest fly to tie in the world. It has three materials altogether and only one if you don't include the hook and thread. Besides it being the easiest fly to tie it is so effective that people have called using this fly cheating. The materials needed are a size 12 nymph hookchenille yarn (my favorite color to tie with is red), and a size 70 thread with the color to match your chenille yarn. You will also need a fly-tying kit with a vice and tools if you do not have one. Here is a cheap and simple starter fly-tying kit with tools and some materials (Wapsi Fly Tying Starter Kit).

There are a lot of different ways people go about tying the San Juan Worm. I am going to give you what in my opinion is the easiest way to go about it. Start by taking your size 12 nymph hook putting it into the vice and wrapping a thread base. The thread base should be from behind the eye of the hook to where the hook begins to bend. Then cut a section of the chenille yarn that is three times as long as the hooks shank. When you begin to tie on the chenille yarn start on the end closest to the hook bend. Take about six or seven wraps cinching the chenille yarn to the hook. Then wrap your thread up to just behind the hook eye and cinch the chenille yarn down again with about six or seven wraps. After that tie off your thread and you are done. This is the easiest way to tie it from what I have found it. Fishing this fly is also easy. It can be fished in fast or slow-moving water. The faster the water the more weight you will need to hold it down so adding a small split shot above it on the tippet is a good idea.
