The deer hair caddis is the ultimate dry fly pattern. It imitates multiple species of bugs that have landed on the water and are floating down stream. The fly requires a size 10 hook, deer body hair, grizzly hackle, natural color dubbing, and a medium weight thread. You will also need all the materials to be able to tie a fly, wapsi has a great fly tying kit with everything you need.
To begin with you will need to put your hook into the vice. After putting your hook in the vice use your thread and make a base from the eye to the bend of the hook. Once there is a good thread base tie in your hackle by the tip to the bend of the hook. Before wrapping the hackle forward to the eye of the hook take out some dubbing and twist it on to your thread. Once your dubbing is on your thread wrap the dubbing to just before the eye of the hook. Then wrap your hackle through the dubbing to the eye of the hook and take a few wraps to secure it. Now for the deer hair, take about a pencil width piece of hair and cut it off the body patch. Pinch it together tightly and tie it down just behind the eye of the hook. Apply some head cement and tie your thread off and you are done.
