The Baitfish Foam Popper

The Baitfish Foam Popper is one of the most fun ways to catch fish on the fly because of the topwater blow-ups it produces. The material that is needed to get this fly started is a size five long shank hook, UTC 140 Thread, single barrel foam head, glue on eyes, pearlescent flash, and UV resin. Since UV resin is needed for this fly, you will also need a UV light to cure the resin, you can find these lights and resin all over Amazon for cheap. You will also need a vice and fly-tying tools. Wapsi makes a nice and cheap starter kit that can be found on the Sportsman's warehouse website.

To begin put your hook into the vice tightly and lay down a thread base. After a thread base is laid down tie in about a pencil width of pearlescent flash about halfway up the hook shank. After that cinch the line tie it off with several whip finishes and cut the thread. Once this is done take some UV resin and lightly put it on the area that the pearlescent flash is tied into. After the UV resin dries take your foam head and slide it on until the back of it is covering your whip finishes. In the slit that the foam head was inserted put UV resin into the crack and cure it. Once it is finished drying put the eyes onto the sides of the foam and you have successfully tied a Baitfish Foam Popper. This is most effective when there is a cloudy day with some ripples in the water. Retrieve it back to you slow or fast but in quick strips so that the foam head uses all of its popping ability.
