The wooly bugger

The wooly bugger is one the most trusted flies amongst fresh water fly fisherman every where. It can imitate a dragon fly larva, a leach, small baitfish, small crayfish, and other larvas. To tie this fly you will need a size 12 long shank bait hook, olive or black chenille, olive or black hackle feathers, olive or black marabou, and a 3/16 ounce bullet head weight. You will also need fly tying tools, a great starting kit can be found for cheap. I would recommend the wapsi fly tying starter kit.

To begin you want to slide your bully weight to the eye of the hook. After the weight is on wrap your thread around the shank and make a good base. After that put a hook shank size peice of marabou on the bend of the hook and tie it in. After that tie in the chenille and back at where you tied the marabou in at. First wrap the chenille forward to the back of the bullet weight in touching spirals. After that wrap the hackle to the back of the bullet weight. Once that is done tie off everything behind the bullet weight and put a few drops of head cement in there to make sure it’s secure. To fish this fly you can throw it in any speed or depth of water. You can slow roll it on the bottom, make it pop up and down or just scream it in. It is very effective in any form.
